Brahmastra: Part One- Shiva
Brahmastra: Part One- Shiva (2022)
Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra, the first instalment in the director’s Astraverse franchise, blended in top-notch visual effects with a complex story involving mythology and fantasy. The Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer followed Shiva, an orphan musician, who discovers that his strange pyrotechnic abilities stem from him being an astra (weapon). The first movie in the trilogy focused on Shiva learning about the astras and training to harness his powers so that he can prevent Brahmastra, the most powerful astra of all, from falling into the wrong hands.

Bhediya
Bhediya (2022)
The second part of Amar Kaushik’s unofficial comedy horror universe, Bhediya is criminally underrated as one of the finest fantasy movies of recent times. The story takes inspiration from Arunachal Pradesh’s legend of Yapum, or shape-shifting werewolf, who guards the jungle. In the film, Bhaskar (Varun Dhawan) travels to a small North-Eastern town for a work project that could destroy the area’s forest. But his best-laid plans go awry when he gets attacked by a mysterious creature and turns into a werewolf.

Eega
Eega (2012)
Before SS Rajamouli was winning over the world with his period action films, the director was pioneering the fantasy action genre. His Eega is an excellent example of the same. In the movie, Nani is murdered by wealthy industrialist Sudeep since they’re both in love with Bindu. As luck would have it, Nani gets reincarnated as a fly and returns to their lives to avenge his death and protect Bindu.

Phillauri (2017)
This Anushka Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh starrer is another underrated fantasy film that deserves a rewatch. In the movie, a young NRI gets married off to a tree before his wedding to his girlfriend after learning that he was born under an unlucky star. Things turn chaotic when he realises that the pseudo-wedding now means that he is married to the ghost who used to haunt the tree.

Oh! Baby (2019)
This remake of the Korean film Miss Granny (2014) follows Savitri, a 70-year-old who gets magically transformed into her 24-year-old self after getting her photograph taken in a mysterious photo booth. The movie stars Samantha Ruth as the young version of Savitri. A Bollywood remake of the Telugu film is also underway.
