7 Classic Beauty Trends We’re Loving This Season

HELLO India Logo
Jeena J Billimoria

We may be in the throes of a brutal summer. But when has that ever hampered an opportunity to bring out the guns — or should we say make-up tools — whenever it’s time to step out? Part of the thrill of being a beauty junkie is getting to experiment, and the seasonal trends that come, go or remain perennially in vogue never fail to keep us on our toes. For summer 2023, here are the champion looks to strive for while playing dress up.

Here are the reigning beauty trends for the season that will keep you on par with the pros, even if you DIY..

Extra Cheeky

This takes from the “dolphin skin” trend, aka a smooth sheen. But instead of a full-face shine, only your cheeks get the ultra-glossy glow-up that takes sunkissed to a whole new level. To create this look, mattify your T-zone and use high-powered highlighters across your cheekbones. While a liquid highlighter will create a natural, dewy-looking finish, a powder will show off a more pigmented, metallic look.

Underpainting 101

For this viral TikTok trend — made popular by celebrity makeup artist, Mary Phillips — you apply your contour and blush underneath your foundation. The result: an airbrush-esque, blended look. Kendall Jenner or Hailey Bieber are proof! Upside-down makeup, or scrambled makeup, where the steps are essentially swapped or rejigged, are all the rage today. It’s a wonder no one thought of shaking things up sooner!

The Power of Two

Two-toned lips have been everywhere since the models at D-Squared2 sported the trend for the Summer 2023 runway. Is it daring? Yes. But in the name of beauty, risks must be taken! The trick is to choose a liquid lipstick (in two shades) that dries quickly, so you apply one colour, wait for it to dry, then go over with the second and wait for that to dry before letting your lips touch. While it sounds tedious, it’ll ensure a lovely pigment that doesn’t bleed. Worth the effort, we say!

Pastels, Please

Who doesn’t love the gentle hues of pastels? If they can work for our homes, they can work on our faces, too! Pastels have fast become the rage, with beauty influencers and make-up artists running wild with eyeshadows and liners that add a new dimension to beauty. This trend requires some skill, for pastel eyeshadow can look chalky and ashy on your skin. So the pro tip would be to dab a white eyeshadow base across your lids before patting on your colour with a shader brush. As for liner, you can go as thin or thick as you like.

Retro Lips

Anyone who’s a fan — or byproduct — of the 90s will be in their element with the retro brown lipstick trend making its definitive comeback. The shade card for browns has never been stronger, and while many associate brown lipsticks with retro fashion, this trend has actually stood the test of time and is still one of the most universally accepted lip tints that you can choose from. Just rummage through your mum’s makeup and start playing.

Make Me Blush

Blush is an integral part of any makeup regimen — you simply can’t do without some! In the current season, the trend has moved to where the blush should be applied. Instead of beginning on the apples of your cheeks, it’s starting more towards the under eyes before draping down the cheeks. This clearly makes for a more blended, wider-surfaced look that can be achieved using powders or lightweight cream formulas. Who doesn’t want to look gorgeously flushed?

Cloud Skin

After a years-long love affair with extra dewy, glassy skin, beauty enthusiasts have circled back to the matte look, or what it’s labelled today — cloud skin. In what is essentially a no-make-up make-up look, it’s a nod to a soft matte finish that looks breathable and stays (relatively) humidity-proof. The trend, while matte, doesn’t discount the inclusion of a gorgeous glow. As for its name, it’s meant to mimic the way clouds can look when the sun shines through them, giving an almost-illuminated appearance. Simply pair a mattifying primer with your go-to dewy complexion products, to create a soft shine and controlled finish. Et voilà!
