Kristen Stewart recently stepped on to the red carpet for the premier of her movie Love Lies Bleeding in a risque super high-cut bodysuit, reminiscent of a wrestling uniform, paired with a black blazer and sheer tights.

A few days later, the actress was spotted in the streets of Manhattan in a cropped button-down shirt and cream, cable-knit hot pants.

The two back-to-back looks prompted us to ask the question du jour: Is the no-pants trend here to stay?

Celebrities and fashion influencers ditching pants is not new. While It girls like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have brought no-pants into the Gen Z style vocabulary, the trend first emerged in the 50s and has, since then, cropped up once every few years.

Edie Sedgwick’s iconic photo atop a leather rhinoceros showed her wearing a T-shirt and black stockings only. Later in the 80s and 90s, the trend continued with Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen sending models sans pants down the runway.

The trend saw many iterations, with Dior and Miu Miu jumping on board the bandwagon in early 2000s.

In 2012, Miley Cyrus opted for just a Jean Paul Gaultier blazer and black and white striped heels for the Billboards Music Awards red carpet.

Celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber brought the trend from the red carpets and runways to the street when they began getting photographed hanging out in the city without any pants on.

Kylie Jenner gave the trend her stamp of approval at Loewe’s 2022 Paris showcase.

Bella Hadid made a statement by going pantless in the city while casually eating a slice of pizza.

Camilla Mendes showed up at the Coach FW23 showcase in black briefs and an oversized bomber jacket.

In 2024, Sydney Sweeney was spotted in the front row at Miu Miu’s showcase in bedazzled underwear.

And most recently, we saw Margot Robbie also emulate the trend at the red carpet of the Oscars after-party, dressed in a golden, vintage Mugler corset.

Is the no-pants trend wearable?

As demonstrated by celebrities and designers (over and over again), ditching pants can be a fun way to experiment with your style. Is it practical and socially acceptable for all occasions? Definitely not. But it’s definitely a great option to try if you want to break out of a style rut.

If you don’t want to go full Kristen Stewart and step out of your house in a pair of tighty-whities, you can experiment with super short-shorts and micro mini skirts paired with sheer tights or see-through skirts like Florence Pugh’s Valentino look for the brand’s showcase in Paris.
