7 Indian Brands That Are Making A Difference To The Environment

Being conscious about your impact on the environment doesn’t mean compromising on your style and aesthetic. The days of shapeless, pared-down sustainable fashion are long gone and, with growing mindfulness about eco-friendly alternatives and sustainability, there are countless environmentally-friendly options you can go for to make your wardrobe leave a positive impact on the planet.

While there are big fashion labels like Anita Dongre and Stella McCartney that have explored sustainable alternatives that are luxurious and stylish, there are many emerging and lesser-known brands that are slowly and steadily making a big name in the space.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, we figured we’ll round up some of our favourite homegrown labels that are doing their bit to make the environment safe and sustainable…

Homegrown Sustainable Fashion Labels To Know In 2023

Summer Somewhere

This Mumbai-based brand has been plastic-neutral from the very start and has only grown to have a positive impact on the environment. Aside from promoting slow fashion and eco-friendly manufacturing processes, the brand has also partnered with ReCircle and pledged to recover 2,500 kg of single-use plastic waste from landfills and oceans this year alone.

Good Indian

What if you could make a difference to the environment while working on your body and fitness? Activewear brand Good Indian aims to do just that by promoting sustainable fitness and athleisure wear made from recycled polyester that is lightweight and perfect for sweating it out in your next gym session. The brand also partnered up with the non-profit Ugaoo to promote its ethos of positive environmental impact with each delivery.

Buna

Buna takes forward founder Pallavi Shantam’s own philosophy of slow and mindful fashion through clothes that are rooted in culture, craft, and community. The label uses natural and handwoven fabrics and follows eco-friendly manufacturing processes and 100 percent biodegradable packaging.

Monrow Shoes

While there are many vegan and eco-friendly footwear brands out there, there are few that offer stylish and versatile options for a mindful and fashion-conscious customer. Founder Veena Ashya has created a brand that uses eco-friendly processes and materials to create fashion-forward footwear with a focus on reducing its carbon footprint.

Ura Maku

Designer Manjushree Saikia went back to her Assamese roots to highlight local crafts from the area, and other surrounding regions, for her brand Ura Maku. The label uses handwoven and natural fabrics to create timeless pieces that break the convention of seasons and cycles and are versatile in their styling potential.

Saritoria

With the rise of pre-loved fashion globally, it’s no surprise that we have a homegrown brand that’s aiming to build a community that’s conscious about its impact on the environment. Founded by Pernia Qureshi and Shehlina Soomro, the brand promotes a circular economy in the space and also has onboard celebrities like Katrina Kaif and ace stylist Tanya Ghavri on board to share exclusive items from their wardrobes.

Reistor

Siblings Mehma and Harjas Singh wanted to create a mindful fashion brand that had a positive impact on the environment and so they created Reistor. The label reinvents staples in sustainable fabrics and promotes minimal and slow fashion.
