It’s official! Our favourite Princess Diaries is now in the works for a highly anticipated third movie! After years of requesting the actors and the creators of the film to show us more of Princess Mia, Disney has finally started to work on the third part of the series. While Anne Hathaway has not confirmed whether she will be coming back as the Queen of Genovia, we do know that she is more than happy to reprise her role. But the OG Queen of Genovia, Julie Andrews, did share that while she would have loved to be a part of the film, she thinks that it is too late to bring her back as the former Queen.
Based on Meg Cabot’s hit series, Princess Diaries 1 and 2 were released in 2001 and 2004 respectively. The story follows a shy teen, Mia, who receives a big piece of news that completely changes her life—she is the only heir to the throne of Genovia, which was ruled by her grandmother, Queen Clarisse. As Mia finds herself working hard towards becoming the perfect princess, she soon realises that being a princess is not just about wearing a tiara.
The third part of the series will be written by Aadrita Mukerji, who has previously worked on Supergirl and Reacher. While the films did stray away from the book, we are excited to see how the upcoming part will play out. While we do have some theories of our own, here are some of our favourite fan theories that we wouldn’t mind coming to life.
Theory 1: Mia Marries Nicholas
As hard as we are trying not to swoon when we think of Chris Pine, we do truly believe that Mia and Nicholas make a perfect pair, even after their complicated and rocky history. After abolishing the age-old tradition of the Princess marrying before taking over the throne, we hopefully see Mia finally married to Lord Devereaux while being the perfect Queen.
Theory 2: Michael Returns
Mia’s long-time crush and love interest from the first part, Michael was not present in the sequel of the film. In second instalment, Mia goes on to reveal how she and Michael are just friends and the fact that he’s on tour with his band. But in Cabot’s book, Royal Wedding, Mia and Michael are still together and are planning their wedding. So, we’re excited to see an old flame coming back and give us the second chance romance of our dreams.
Theory 3: Someone New Walks In
What if Michael and Nicholas are not the men for the Queen of Genovia? We wouldn’t mind seeing a whole new character come into Mia’s life as she navigates and absolutely aces the role of being Queen.
Whatever may be the plot, it’s safe to say that we can’t wait to watch our favourite childhood movie come back for a third instalment.
