It’s that time of the year again when film buffs gear up to experience some of the most meaningful cinema of the year and fashion enthusiasts glue themselves to their phones to catch what the celebrities wear at the iconic red carpet. The 75th Cannes Film Festival is all set to begin in a few days and this one marks a special one for our country as India and France are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties with each other. This is why India has been chosen as the ‘Country of Honour’ at the Marché du Film, which is organised alongside the film festival.

We have rounded up some of the things we’re looking forward to at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, from all the Indian celebrities at the red carpet to the much-anticipated movie screenings…

Six Indian films will be screening at the film festival

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has shortlisted six movies to be screened at the festival. These include movies from various langauges, aside from Hindi, like R. Madhavan’s Rocketry – The Nambi Effect (Hindi, English, Tamil), Godavari (Marathi), Alpha Beta Gamma (Hindi), Boomba Ride (Mising), Dhuin (Hindi, Marathi) and Tree Full of Parrots (Malayalam).

There will be a lot of Indian celebrities. A lot.

To celebrate India’s association with France for the past 75 years, the I & B ministry is sending a delegation of Indian celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, A.R Rahman, Pooja Hegde, Tamannaah Bhatia, Nayanthara, and more. Some of the cast members of the movies that are being screened at the festival, like R. Madhavan, are also going to be present. Folk singer Mame Khan, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi, and Grammy-winning musician Ricky Kej will also be there. Deepika Padukone will be there, not only as an attendee but, as one of the eight-member jury to decide the winner of the Palme d’Or honour at the end of the festival.

The Palme d’Or trophy is gorgeous

Speaking of the Palme d’Or honour, the winner of the award will be handed a stunning trophy crafter by Chopard. The trophy has been specially designed to celebrate the 75 years of the festival and its 25-year long partnership with the brand. To appropriately honour the occasion the two leaves of the Palme are diamond-studded, with one having 75 diamonds, while the other having 25. The base of the trophy has also been switched from a traditional rock crystal to a rose quartz, a stone that symbolises love.

South Korean singer IU will be making her big screen debut at Cannes this year

While singer IU, or Lee Ji-eun, is usually known for selling out stadiums and starring in intensely watchable K-dramas, she is going to be making her big screen debut with the film Broker. The film also stars Parasite actor Song Kang-ho and Sense8’s Bae Doona.

Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae’s directorial debut will screen at the festival this year

Another South Korean actor who is all set to make big waves at the festival this year is Squid Game‘s leading man Lee Jung-jae. The actor is making his directorial debut with the movie Hunt this year. The movie will be screened for the first time at the festival.
