If you grew up watching Disney channel originals in the early aughts, there’s great news for you. A sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place is in the works and all our favourite characters are returning, including Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo and David Henrie’s Justin Russo.

The news was confirmed late in January and recently Selena Gomez opened up about the sequel during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

The show was about the Russo family who lived in the titular Waverly Place. The seemingly normal family hid a big secret that they were equipped with magical abilities. It focussed on Alex Russo as she trains, alongside her brothers, to inherit her family’s magic. The show premiered in 2007 and went off air in 2012.

The actress-turned-singer-turned-actress/beauty mogul revealed that she is super excited to reunite with her former cast members and reprise her role in the show.

What is plot of the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel?

As Selena Gomez clarified on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show, the upcoming show is not going to be a reboot but a “different thing”. It will, reportedly, revolve around Justin Russo, the sibling who went to work at Wiz Tech at the end of the original series. In the sequel, Justin leaves the magical world behind to live a normal life with his family. He, inevitably, gets pulled back when a young wizard needs his help to master his growing powers.

Who will be cast in the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel?

Cast members from the original show David Henrie, David De Luise, Selena Gomez and Maria Canals-Barrera shared a photo together on Instagram right after the announcement and confirmed that they will be a part of the sequel.

While David Henrie will be a series regular, Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo will be a special appearance in the show’s pilot. Jake T Austin, aka Max Russo, also shared that he is excited to be back with his castmates.

David Henrie confirmed later that all original cast members will be returning to the sequel in differing capacities over the course of the show.

Aside from the old cast members, there are some newbies joining the cast, including Janice Le Ann Brown, Alkaio Thiele and Mimi Gianopulous.

When will the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel be released?

So far, Disney has not announced or confirmed any release date for the sequel.
