Have you ever thought about how 2 States would look like if it was made by Karan Johar? If yes, then you should definitely check out the recently released trailer for the director’s upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. And also think about getting some new hobbies, perhaps?

The upcoming movie marks Johar’s return to the director chair for a full-length feature after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, the trailer of the movie couldn’t help but remind us of the 2014 film starring Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor.

Hear us out.

Like in 2 States, the central love story in RARKPK is of two people belonging to two wildly different cultures. Just as in the Chetan Bhagat book adaptation, the movie follows how the differences in their cultures and their dysfunctional families act as an obstacle in their seemingly perfect love story. As the trailer showed us, the upcoming movie also features the two lovebirds switching families to show how well they could adjust to each other.

Now we’re not complaining because Johar’s characteristic charm and ability to deliver a solid entertainer, complete with gorgeous costumes and intensely hummable music is evident in the trailer.

So without further ado, here are five things that we noticed (and loved) about the trailer for Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani

The star-studded cast

The movie is reuniting the much-loved pairing from Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy and those countless unskippable Make My Trip ads, with Bhatt and Singh playing off each other’s infectious energy and charm. The movie also stars stalwarts like Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, and Jaya Bachchan. It’s been a while since we’ve seen an ensemble cast like this on our screens and we can’t wait to see the magic.

A full-blown entertainer

While the story of two star-crossed lovers with their families throwing a wrench in their plans is not a new one, it’s definitely a classic theme in Bollywood movies. Johar’s return to form is clearly an ode to Hindi cinema in all its dramatic and over-the-top glory.

A true blue romantic comedy after a long time

While we’ve gotten several light-hearted and adorable romantic comedies over the past few years, there’s been a dearth of movies that are unafraid to be all about love, familial or otherwise, and Johar’s RARKPK might be the one to pull us out of the slump. The now-viral song ‘Tum Kya Mile’ is a testament to the fact that the director is going back to the basics and bringing back the old-school romance in full force with this one.

A mix of genres

With Bhatt’s unique ability to look vulnerable yet strong at the same time and Singh’s underrated comedic chops, the movie promises to take viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. The family switcharoo is always a plot point rife with possibilities of humour and dramatic moments and it’s clear that with Bachchan’s turn as a possible villain in the movie, it’s going to be a tonne of fun.

The costumes

Say what you will about Johar’s movies, there’s no denying that they’re always aesthetically sound. The beauty looks and the wardrobes of the characters are always on point and RARKPK is no different. We already got a glimpse at the impressive sari collection flaunted by Bhatt in the movie in the song ‘Tum Kya Mile’ and the trailer gave us enough reason to cheer for costume designer Manish Malhotra and his work in the movie.
