Remember how we said that the month of May is going to be a treat for astronomy enthusiasts all over the world? Turns out, there’s another reason this month is special and it’s because we’re going to witness a rare black moon tonight.

What is a Black Moon?

The second new moon in a single month or the third new moon in a season of four new moons is referred to as a Black Moon. This is not an official astronomical term but is named so because the moon seemingly disappears from the sky when this phenomenon occurs.

It happens at the time of the month when the moon passes through the same part of the sky as the sun and the moon’s dark side, or the unilluminated side, faces the Earth.

There’s nothing to see in the sky as it’s invisible. A couple of evenings later, you’ll be able to see a sliver of a crescent moon. Some people mistakenly refer to this as the new moon, however, the Black Moon is the true new moon.

Why is this Black Moon special?

A Black Moon occurs approximately once every 33 months. We did not witness a single Black Moon in 2021. This time, it’s happening on May 19, 2023. It’s a treat for stargazers as they’re able to see stars and constellations much more easily than before.

Does the Black Moon have any astrological significance?

Black Moon, as with any new moon, comes with its fair share of astrological impact. Many astrologers place significant importance on it as it’s a repeated lunar event in a month and that is believed to have an even more intense effect.

Moonless nights are supposed to be a time for inward focus and inspiration. It’s also a time when you can reboot and restart for a fresh beginning.
