Romantic comedies are back and how! After a long drought with sporadic releases, we’re finally getting romantic comedies that are heartwarming and filled with all the tropes we have loved and missed for so long.

Whether it’s the unexpected box-office hit Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, or Netflix’s relentless effort to revive the genre, rom-com fans have a lot to celebrate.

This Netflix rom-com is based on the 2011 novel The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E Smith. The story follows two strangers who meet at the airport and fall in love throughout a New York-London flight. But when they get separated at customs, will fate intervene and reunite them? If you’ve seen even one romantic comedy movie in your lifetime, you’d know the answer to this!

Anyone But You (2023)

We truly know that the genre is back now that we’ve got a fresh adaptation of a Shakespeare play in a modern setting. This Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell starrer is loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing and follows a couple with an amazing first date that didn’t go anywhere after their initial attraction soured. Years later, the two reunite at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple to keep up appearances.

Crazy Rich Asians fans will love this heartwarming rom-com about a Chinese family based in Australia. Lia, a failing tea shop owner, is gifted a prophecy that says she will meet her soulmate in five dates and he will help her save the teashop.

This queer teen comedy is a hilarious subversion of tropes common to the genre but is easily one of the most memorable rom-coms of 2023. It follows best friends PJ and Josie and they start a fight club for girls in their school as an excuse to get closer to their crushes.

This romantic comedy explores the nuances of a long-term relationship beautifully. It follows a novelist who overhears her husband’s honest reaction to her latest book which causes her to question everything about their marriage and relationship.
