It can be argued that brooches never really went anywhere. They’ve always been a staple in the wardrobes of royals like the late Queen Elizabeth, who would often break out the ‘Prince Albert Brooch’ that she inherited from Queen Victoria or the ‘Scarab Brooch’ that was gifted to her by Prince Phillip. There was nary an occasion where she was spotted without one adorning her colourful coats.
The decorative jewellery item has been around for ages. The first brooch can be traced back to the Bronze Age and has since signified a person’s social status. More recently, the accessory has made a comeback as another way of self expression, with jewellery brands and luxury design houses coming up with creative and cool motifs for brooches.
Gucci has been on the brooch hype train since 2020 and other designers and labels like Acne and Jill Sanders have joined the club.
Many celebrities have also had iconic brooch moments recently, like Rihanna’s blinding bling at last year’s Super Bowl halftime show or Lady Gaga’s oversized Schiaparelli dress for US President Biden’s Innuagration ceremony which was adorned with an oversized dove brooch.
All major red carpets, from the Oscars to the Emmys have seen celebrities rocking brooches, like Timothee Chalamet at the 2020 Academy Awards with his vintage Cartier brooch.
Closer to home, certified style icon Sonam Kapoor gave brooches her stamp of approval when she recently wore one on her bespoke Kunal Rawal ensemble.
The accessory is also seeing a revival because of our renewed interest in upcycling and thrifting. Vintage clothing and accessory items, like brooches, are being adopted by mindful style enthusiasts and it’s encouraging a revival for the jewellery item.
The best thing about a brooch is that you cannot go wrong with it. The only thing to keep in mind is that the brooch will draw attention to where you place it. So you can play around with its size, design or placement by adding it to your lapel, collar, or even the waist.
