Elvis

The movie has earned eight nominations at the Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Austin Butler. This Baz Luhrmann-directed film chronicles the life of American rock and roll singer Elvis Presley under the management of Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks).

The Banshees of Inisherin

Martin McDonagh’s black comedy-drama is set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland and follows two best friends who suddenly find themselves at an impasse when one of them ends their friendship without any explanation. The movie has been nominated in nine categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Aftersun

Actor Paul Mescal earned himself his first Oscar nomination for his role in this coming-of-age drama. In the movie, Sophie reminisces about her last holiday at a fading Turkish resort with her father Calum and how things have changed for her over the years.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Based on the 1929 novel of the same name, the movie is about the horrific realities of war. It follows the life of an idealistic young boy who enlists to serve in the army when war breaks out in Germany in 1914. It has been nominated in nine categories, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

Top Gun: Maverick

One of the highest-grossing movies of last year, Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to the 1986 movie starring Tom Cruise. The actor reprises his role as naval aviator Maverick who has to train a group of young Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission. This action drama is up for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Ana de Armas is up for Best Actress at the Oscars this year for her portrayal of Marylin Monroe in this fictionalised take on her tumultuous life.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

This Marvel movie has been nominated for four Oscars, including one nod for Angela Bassett for Best Supporting Actress. It’s a sequel to the 2018 hit Black Panther and focuses on the leaders of Wakanda trying to protect their nation in the aftermath of King T’Challa’s death.

The Elephant Whisperers

Aside from ‘Naatu Naatu’ from RRR being nominated for ‘Best Song’ at the Oscars, two Indian documentaries are also up for an award during the night. While Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes is not available to be streamed in India at the moment, you can watch The Elephant Whisperers by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga on Netflix. The documentary is about the bond that develops between a couple and an orphaned baby elephant who was entrusted into their care. Gonsalves spent five years following the family for the documentary.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Guillermo del Toro reimagines the classic tale of Pinnochio in this stop-motion animated dark fantasy film. The Best Animated Feature-nominated film has a star-studded voice cast, including Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.
