6 Spine-Chilling South Indian Thrillers That Are A Must-Watch

It’s no surprise that over the past couple of years, South Indian movies have slowly gained popularity across the country. More and more Hindi-speaking people have started overcoming the barrier of language and exploring the incredible stories and talent in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam movies. The diversity of genres and superlative performances make South Indian movies a must-watch.

Some of the best Indian thrillers are from South Indian cinema. Over the years, many have even inspired Bollywood adaptations, like Drishyam or Vikram Vedha.

More recently, thrillers like Kantara, Yashoda, and Vikram have garnered critical acclaim and earned big numbers at the box office too. These movies cover a variety of sub-genres in the thriller categories too, from classic crime thrillers to ones with enough twists and turns to keep you at the edge of your seats.

We decided to round up some of the best South Indian thrillers for you to watch this weekend…

Visaranai (2015)

This Tamil socio-political thriller is based on the book Lock Up by M. Chandrakumar and won three National Film Awards, including one for Best Feature Film. The movie deals with the lives of two men before and after they get thrown in prison and tortured for a confession.

U-Turn (2018)

This Kannada supernatural thriller stars current national crush Samantha Prabhu. It follows an intern journalist who starts investigating a suspicious accident with the help of a police inspector. Things turn messy when she is accused of murdering an informant for her story.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017)

This Malayalam thriller stars Fahadh Faasil and Suraj Venjaramoodu. This, however, is not your average crime thriller. A down-on-their-luck newlywed couple is on their way to sell the wife’s gold chain to get some money, only to have it stolen on the train ride. The film earned many awards, including three National Film awards.

Memories (2013)

This slasher crime-thriller has been directed by Jeethu Joseph, the brains behind Drishyam and Drishyam 2, the original Malayalam-language ones. In the movie, an alcoholic cop has to deal with his own demons while investigating a series of murders that have a similar pattern.

7th Day (2014)

This neo-noir thriller packs a big twist that would make you want to watch the film again to pay close attention to any clues you might have missed during the movie. A chance encounter with two men on the night of Christmas lead a suspended IPS officer on a trail to unravel an intriguing mystery.

Vishwaroopam (2013)

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has not only written, directed, and produced the movie, but he also stars as the lead in it. The story follows an ambitious woman studying in the USA who gets married to an Indian classical dance master. Soon, she starts getting suspicious about his off-behaviour and hires a private investigator to figure out his secrets.
