Fitness Tips That Keep Shakira’s Hips Shaking & Skin Glowing

Three time Grammy-winner and mum of two, Shakira is one of the world’s most famous singers and performers. It’s no surprise that the ‘Waka Waka’ hitmaker works really hard to keep in shape and live a healthy lifestyle even when she isn’t preparing for things like stadium concerts, Super Bowls and FIFA openings.

Aside from extra activity (i.e. a lot of dance rehearsals), her fitness routine has remained more or less the same as it has been for years. Here’s how she manages to stay in such great shape at 45 years old.

Shakira works out six days a week

Shakira’s trainer and good friend Anna Kaiser shared with multiple publications about the artist’s strict fitness routine ahead of her once-in-a-lifetime performance at the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez back in 2020. “Every day is different because I want to make sure I’m preparing her not just for the Super Bowl, but for each day as it comes,” she said. Her workout is modified depending on the physical demands of the workday ahead. “She had a really long dance rehearsal in the afternoon one day, so we just focused on an hour of pure strength in the morning,” Kaiser said. “[Some days] she has even longer days of physical dance rehearsals, so she just started with something very short: 20 minutes.”

She does a wide variety of workouts

Other days, when the singer has the time, she intensifies her workouts specifically programmed by Kaiser for her fitness studio, AKT. They can range from anything between sports conditioning to dance intervals to HIIT or circuit classes. “It is really important both for your mind and your body to consistently switch up your workouts so that you keep your head in the game, you don’t get bored, and you have a workout that’s going to work for you that day for what you need to accomplish that day,” Kaiser said. She added that Shakira works out six days a week and rests on Sundays.

Her trainer revealed that the singer loves listening to Green Day to get in the groove of a workout. “Shakira’s committed to fitness and wellness, and not just to be in shape for a specific event,” Kaiser shared. “But so that she can continue to perform injury-free into her 40s and stay healthy.”

She diligently wears an activity tracker

Another pro fitness tip Shakira stands by is wearing an activity tracker. “Knowing if your body is changing, if you’re getting results, and how hard you’re working in class is super important,” Kaiser revealed.

She doesn’t check her phone until her morning routine is done

Even though it’s not an easy task for her to accomplish, this is a daily practice she follows as per her trainer’s advice. “Kaiser doesn’t let me turn on my phone until I finish my workout and spend time with my kids,” the mum of two said in an Instagram video.

“It’s not just the Super Bowl,” Kaiser said. “She’s filming new music videos, she’s coming out with new music, she’s still really involved with her philanthropy schools in Colombia. There are just so many things happening at one time. Plus she’s a mum, she has kids and she wants to spend time with them too. There’s just not enough hours in a day. So we have to refocus. Refocus, realign, and find ways to try to be present.” That’s a great tip right there, folks!

She eats light, fresh, healthy meals throughout the day

While discussing Shakira’s pre-Super Bowl diet, her trainer shared various meal options that follow the same basic plan: small, nutrient-rich meals that keep her fueled throughout the day. When prepping for a major performance, she eliminates sugar and dairy, but overall, even when it’s not crunch-time, Kaiser said that the singer is usually great about eating in moderation.

“She’s good about it in general, but she will treat herself,” Kaiser said. “Balance is really important. Having those moments where you’re allowed to cheat every once in a while is also very important.” She even works with Shakira’s chef to formulate meal plans and snack options for her work days. Kaiser revealed that the musician doesn’t like supplementing, so all the food has to be fresh.

She eats well-balanced meals on rotation

“Breakfast could be eggs or avocado with olive oil, tomato, sea salt, then a smoothie, berries, plant protein, sometimes greens or green powder,” Kaiser explained. “Then for lunch, we have fish and fresh vegetables or a salad with lots of colours. Afternoon is, I know it gets really busy, but we’ll do soup. There are some really good artichoke soups, or it could be a leek and eggplant soup, carrot ginger, and sometimes with a side of cucumbers with lemon and salt. For dinner, she’ll also do fish and veggies. It’s usually cold for lunch and warm for dinner.”

If that rotation gets a little repetitive, they’ll incorporate one of Shakira’s favourites once in a while—pork chops. “Sometimes there will be dark chocolate, like a really pure dark chocolate with little to no sugar in it,” Kaiser shared.

She keeps it simple when it comes to skincare

Vitamin C and sunscreen are her two holy grails, according to a video Shakira did with beauty YouTuber Melanie Murphy. She said she likes using a vitamin C serum “because it stimulates collagen” and it also helps to keep her skin even and bright.

The singer doesn’t play when it comes to sun protection, and uses a high broad spectrum level sunscreen no lower than SPF 100. Those two staples, combined with her pact against drinking alcohol and smoking, keep her hips shaking and her skin glowing even in her 40s.
