This year, while some celebrities epitomised the big, fat Indian wedding, others chose to keep things intimate, with nary an impersonal element. HELLO! takes you through some of the dreamiest, high-profile shenanigans of 2021-22 that had the world hooked for details…

Katrina Kaif & Vicky Kaushal

December 9, 2021, marked the day when one of India’s most secretive weddings brought together two superstars — Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal. Elegant and pastel-themed, the three-day extravaganza sent the media into a tizzy, with a strict rule on the use of cellphones and social media.

An intimate affair at the royal Six Senses Fort Barwara, Sawai Madhopur, the guest list was restricted to a little over a 100 people, including justthe couple’s family, close friends and a handful of celebrities such as Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi, Mini Mathur and Kabir Khan, Sharvari Wagh and Farah Khan.

The bride and groom were both dressed in custom Sabyasachi ensembles for their big day, styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania. Katrina looked radiant in a multicoloured matka silk lehenga with a patchwork blouse and an embroidered tulle dupatta, inspired by the designer’s Kashgar Bazaar collection; draped on her was a bespoke veil that was an ode to Vicky’s Punjabi roots. Vicky made a gleeful groom in an embroidered raw silk bandhgala jacket and a mint silk kurta.

Anmol Ambani & Khrisha Shah

Anil and Tina Ambani’s elder son Anmol tied the knot with social worker, entrepreneur andfounder of Dysco, Khrisha Shah, in February 2022. The festivities at Sea Wind, the Ambani residence in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, included a traditional mehndi, a wedding high-tea as well as a lavish dinner, followed by a cocktail party.

The décor was a beautiful mix of the traditional and modern elegance in hues of cream, gold and pink. At the exclusive event were celebrities such as Jaya Bachchan and her daughter Shweta Bachchan, Rima Jain and politician Supriya Sule. Khrisha wore a heavy red lehenga embellished with floral patterns, with Anmol complementing her in a crisp white sherwani. If the fun photographs are anything to go by, it was a day neither will ever forget!

Farhan Akhtar & Shibani Dandekar

After four years of dating, Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar finally made it official on February 19. The couple exchanged their vows in an intimate setting on the outskirts of Mumbai, in the presence of just their family and friends.

Exquisite floral decorations further accentuated the lush surroundings of the farmhouse venue. Besides Farhan and Shibani’s family, including Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Zoya Akhtar and Anusha Dandekar, the occasion was also graced by notable celebrities such as Hrithik Roshan — who set the stage on fire! — Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Rhea Chakraborty and Amrita Arora, among many others. On the day of the wedding, the groom arrived in a black Govinda Mehta tuxedo, while the bride donned a ravishing red corset top and skirt set, custom designed by Jade by MK, complete with a bold red, trailing veil.

Isheta Salgaocar & Atulya Mittal

No expense was spared to bring together Isheta Salgaocar, business tycoon Mukesh Ambani’s niece, and Atulya Mittal, the founder of Nexzu Mobility.

Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace and then Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire came alive this July to extravagant celebrations, where Isheta went completely traditional in a heavily-embellished Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla pastel pink lehenga. While she wore acomplementing pink choli adorned with pearl drops at the hemline and a net dupatta with intricate gota patti work, her groom wore a cream sherwani paired with a white doshala and turban. The lavish celebrations brought together not only the entire Ambani clan, but also a number of business magnates and prominent faces such as Anand Ahuja and Shalini Passi.

Nayanthara & Vignesh Shivan

In a ceremony that took everyone— but the exclusive guest list — by surprise — actor Nayanthara and producer-filmmaker Vignesh Shivan got married near Chennai on June 9.

Their high-profile wedding was attended by many a popular face, including Rajinikanth, Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya. For the low-key, intimate affair, the bride donned a custom red embroidered saree with full sleeves by designer label Jade by MK, while Vignesh chose an ivory ensemble for their big day. Such was the glitz and glamour of this affair that Netflix is all set to release a documentary around it, titled Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

Alia Bhatt & Ranbir Kapoor

Straying from the norm of big, fat Indian celebrity weddings, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s big day was as intimate an affair as can be. They tied the knot on April 14, 2022, on the balcony of Vastu, their home in Mumbai’s Bandra neighbourhood.

Besides their immediate family and close friends, the couple had prominent faces celebrating their day, including Karan Johar, Gauri Khan, Malaika Arora, Ayan Mukerji, and Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta.

Another Sabyasachi pair, Alia was decked up in a beautiful ivory and gold organza saree, while Ranbir wore an embroidered silk sherwani with Sabyasachi uncut diamond buttons, a silk organza safa and a shawl with zari marori embroidery. In keeping with the minimal ambience of the entire affair, Alia’s makeup, too, was much appreciated; she opted to keep her look subtle and simple, accessorised with Sabyasachi heritage jewellery.
