Inarguably one of the best, and most underrated, romantic comedies of all time, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is getting a third part officially!
Nia Vardalos, who played Toula in the movie, announced on Instagram that the third installment of the franchise has begun shooting in Greece this month. Vardalos, who has written and starred in the first two movies and has returned as a writer for this one, also had a special announcement to make about the third film. Sitting in her hotel room in the Plaka of Athens, where the movie is reportedly filming, the actress announced that she would be directing the upcoming installment.
Spread over two decades, this movie franchise has won both critical and popular acclaim and if you, like us, can’t wait for the third movie, here are a few details to keep you happy till then!
Who all are going to be in the movie?
With Vardalos coming back as Toula, it is a given that John Corbett will be reprising his role as Ian. While the full cast hasn’t been announced yet, it has been reported that the whole Portokalos family would be making an appearance in the film, including Elena Kampouris (Toula and Ian’s daughter from the second movie), Laine Kazan (Toula’s mom Maria) and Andrea Martin (Toula’s hilarious aunt Voula).
Unfortunately, Toula’s overbearing yet loveable father Gus (Michael Constantine) passed away in 2021. Vardalos says the third movie is dedicated to his memory.
What is the third movie going to be about?
Once again, the plot details are still being kept under the wraps, although Vardalos did clarify that Toula and Ian are not going to be grandparents in this one. Deadline has reported that in this one, the family would be travelling to Greece to celebrate their daughter’s wedding, which tracks with the cast being present in Athens.
If you need a little catch-up, the first movie followed Toula and Ian’s love story against the background of her very chaotic but loving family, and the 2016 sequel saw Toula’s parents getting married again after a clerical error revealed that they were never technically wed in a church. It also introduced Toula and Ian’s daughter and their troubles in dealing with her growing independence.
When can we see the movie?
Again, there are no confirmed details about the release date of the movie. But since the filming has officially begun, it is safe to say that we won’t have to wait as long as we did for the second part after the first movie released.
