For fans of James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar, there’s finally light at the end of a very, very long tunnel. The makers have confirmed that the sequel to the movie, titled Avatar: The Way Of Water, will release in theaters in December this year.

A new teaser trailer for the movie also dropped recently, giving fans a glimpse of what they can expect from the movie.

The first movie followed the colonisation of a planet called Pandora in the distant future, where humans want to mine it for a valuable mineral called unobtanium. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the existence of the Na’avi tribe, a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. Former US Soldier Jake Sully is recruited as part of the ‘avatar’ program where he can inhabit the body of an artificially created Na’vi-human hybrid, in order to infiltrate the tribe and gain their trust. But after spending time on Pandora with the Na’vis, Sully realises the error of his ways and decides to fight back.

At the time of its release, the movie captured the imagination of millions across the world, making it one of the top-grossing films of all time, something it continues to do so despite the advent of the superhero genre.

Along with a release date, it has also been hinted that a teaser could be attached to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which hits the theaters on May 6, 2022.

Here’s everything we know about Avatar: The Way Of Water…

What is it going to be about?

While there’s not much information about the plot available, the trailer (and the name of the movie!) reveal that the movie will largely be set underwater. This is also the reason why it has taken so long to be made. According to the makers, the movie will be set 14 years after the events of the first film and will follow Sully, the new chieftain of the tribe, and Neytri, the new High Priestess, as they navigate new challenges and parenthood. Cameron has also revealed that we would be taking a journey from Pandora to the underwater world, and eloquently stated that it will make “you sh*t yourself with your mouth wide open”. So there.

There’s also going to be a deaf character introduced in the film as Baby Driver’s CJ Jones has been recruited to create a new Na’vi sign language for the movie.

Who is going to be in it?

Original leads Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are reprising their roles as Sully and Neytri. Stephen Lang is also coming back as the evil Colonel Quaritch, despite being killed off at the end of the first one by Neytri. Cameron said it’s a sci-fi movie and anything is possible, so there you go. Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine is also back this time, once again seemingly revived from the dead by the power of Cameron and CGI. New cast members include Kate Winslet, who is collaborating with Cameron for the first time after Titanic (1997), Edie Falco, Vin Diesel, Game of Throne’s Oona Chaplin, and Michelle Yeoh.

When can we see it?

The movie is slated to hit the theaters on December 16, 2022. Disney has also announced that the first movie will be re-released in theaters in September for fans to familiarise themselves with the universe once again.
