Imagine someone who went for a nap after watching Thor: The Dark World in 2013 and woke up in 2022 to the teaser of Thor: Love And Thunder, with Jane Foster as the new Thor and the mighty God of Thunder taking a break to find inner peace. Even if the aforementioned someone found out that they slept through wars, One Direction disbanding, and a global pandemic, this would be shocking enough to send them back to sleep.
The teaser for the new Thor movie, the fourth in the franchise, dropped recently. Directed by Taika Waititi, who deserves all the accolades for breathing life back into the franchise with Thor: Ragnarok (2017), the movie picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has left Earth with the Guardians of The Galaxy and is now on a quest for inner peace (this is from Marvel’s official description, we’re not making it up!). His retirement is interrupted by another galactic killer, this time it’s Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of Gods if the name wasn’t obvious enough. Thor enlists the help of his friends King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi himself), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) who, to everyone’s surprise, can now wield Mjolnir, making her the new Goddess of Thunder. Together, they embark on a cosmic adventure to stop Gorr from, well, butchering the Gods.
The story is based on Jason Aaron’s comic The Mighty Thor, where Foster takes over as the Goddess of Thunder after Mjolnir deems Odinson unworthy and takes away his powers. It’s not clear how close the movie’s storyline is to the comic book’s, but fans couldn’t be more excited to see the movie now.
Portman left the series after reportedly being upset because of the replacement of the original director of Dark World from Patty Jenkins to Alan Taylor. Looks like Waititi has managed to convince her to come back to the MCU for this new movie.
Other cast members include the Guardians of the Galaxy actors, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Vin Diesel. From previous Thor movies, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum, and Jaimie Alexander will be returning for this one. Aside from Bale, Russell Crowe is a new addition to the cast and will be playing the role of Zeus. While Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki in the MCU (through the eponymous TV series), he is still un-alive in the movies.
The movie is slated to release on July 8, 2022.
