Simu Liu has created quite the stir online ever since he was cast as the first-Asian superhero in the Marvel film, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. From what he wears to what he eats, netizens want to know everything about Liu’s life.
In eastern countries, Asian meals and snacks have always been subjected to hate and ridicule but with a boom in the Asian entertainment and fashion industry, more and more people are now finding their favourites in classic Asian snacks. During an interview, the Kim’s Convenience star shared, “So many Asian kids like myself, when we brought these snacks to school, we used to get made fun of because the kids didn’t know what they were.” “Representation matters, and it’s about more than just actors on a screen. It’s about snacks, it’s about food, it’s about culture, in every possible way,” Liu actor added.
But the one snack he absolutely loves has to be Pocky. Yup, the thin, cream-coated sticks that can be eaten in one go are his all-time favourite. And while his love for Pocky goes way beyond, there is one particular snack that the star was indulging in during a life-changing moment. Liu shared how Shrimp Crackers were the snack he was munching on when he got the call that he will be playing the role of Shang-Chi. “I’d just woken up from a nap, it was around 6:30 in the evening. I was eating some Shrimp Crackers at my desk. Then I get a call from an unknown number in Burbank, California and my heart immediately skips a beat because I know the Disney home office is in Burbank,” the actor said. “I had a feeling this was going to be the call, so I picked up the phone and it was Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige’s voice on the other end, telling me I was going to be Shang-Chi. And I basically realised that my life was going to be changed forever,“ he added.
