These light-hearted, wholesome shows are perfect for when you’re looking to unwind or indulge your sweet tooth in a much healthier way than gorging on sugary desserts all day long.

Dessert Competition TV Shows on Netflix

Whether you’re someone who can bake a cake like nobody’s business or someone whose baking experience is limited to watching cupcake frosting ASMR videos online, these Netflix shows about desserts are meant for you…

Sugar Rush

If you love reality shows that are all about the content, delicious-looking desserts in this case, and feature zero drama, then this one is definitely for you. The premise is simple. Four teams of two professional bakers each compete against each other in a baking competition for $10,000. Each episode features a different theme and has the bakers compete in three rounds where they wow the judges with their cupcakes, confectioneries, and ultimately a life-size cake.

Is It Cake?

The streaming platform got so inspired by the viral trend of cakes that look like real-life objects that it decided to greenlight an entire eight-episode long reality show series. The show has contestants identify and create cakes that look like everyday objects, like shoes or a beach ball, after which a panel of celebrity judges try and guess, from a selection of similar-looking objects, which one is a cake and which one is an ordinary object. SNL’s Mikey Day hosts this bizarre yet incredibly watchable show.

School of Chocolate

If you’ve been on the Internet any time in the past year, then there’s a great chance that you’ve stumbled across one of Chef Amaury Guichon’s chocolate creations. The Swiss-French pastry chef and chocolatier is known for his breathtaking sculptures made entirely out of chocolate. In the show, he turns mentor and judge to eight contestants as they learn how to work the delicious ingredient and create stunning-looking desserts and sculptures. But fair warning, only watch this show if you have a healthy stack of chocolates around you because you will be craving it for sure.

Zumbo’s Just Desserts

12 bakers compete to impress internationally-renowned pátissier and no-nonsense chef Adriano Zumbo with their unique and innovative desserts. The ones who fail to do so have to compete with each other to recreate some of Zumbo’s iconic creations to fight for a spot in the show.

Nailed It

If you’ve ever looked at a cake recipe online and thought to yourself that you could easily recreate it at home, only to end up with a sad and poor imitation of what you saw on screen, then this reality show is for you. Three unassuming bakers compete with each other in every episode to replicate complicated desserts. Whoever comes the closest to the original dish, ends up winning the cash prize.

Nadiya Bakes

Full disclosure, this show might not just be about desserts as the titular Nadiya bakes both savory and sweet treats. The celebrity chef, cookbook author, and winner of The Great British Bake Off, Nadiya Hussain shares her easy-to-recreate-at-home recipes for baked goods, like her strawberry shortcake or a vegan banana ice cream cheesecake. If it helps, there’s one whole episode dedicated to indulgent desserts, so there’s that.

Bake Squad

Refreshingly free of usual reality competition show elements like eliminations or an end prize, this competitive show features a squad of four bakers who compete with each other to create a cake or confectionery item that would get selected for the final event per episode. Watch it if you love baking and just want to see a group of bakers celebrate the art of baking by doing what they love to ultimately bring happiness to someone.

Baking Impossible

You have to give it to the streaming giant for having a unique and odd bunch of reality shows in its bank. This particular show pairs a baker with an engineer, both of whom have not met each other prior to filming the show, and has them compete in teams opposite other baker-engineer pairs to create desserts that are both delicious and can survive rigorous engineering obstacle tests. So you have contestants trying to create a 2ft long sailboat that is a cake but should also be able to move (without falling apart, of course) by using a remote control, or an edible robot that could pass through a series of obstacles in a dessert-themed obstacle course.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell

This scripted reality show combines two of the most unlikely things: spooks and desserts. As the title suggests, the show revolves around artist and baker Christine McConnell, who lives in a haunted mansion. McConnell creates spooky desserts like peanut butter pretzel bones, a haunted gingerbread house, and wolf claw donuts. It’s the perfect show to watch if you love horror movies and Halloween season.
