Vintage Maxi Skirts Are Back With A Bang This Season

While miniskirts have dominated the fashion landscape and runways for what seems like forever, designers have recently started shifting away from shorter hemlines, and towards the trusty maxi skirt. This season is all about chic, form-fitting styles that are made to flatter all body types. Think Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston in floor-length denim skirts from the late ’90s and early 2000s.

More recently, supermodel Gigi Hadid turned heads with denim maxi skirts and basically resurged the style for us muggles. She attended the Fashion Media Awards in new season Jade Cropper – pairing a raw-edged denim maxi with a crop top – and arrived at her sister Bella’s birthday in frothy, acid-wash vintage Roberto Cavalli.

Given that denim is a staple in not just our closets, but the runways also in some way or form, recent shows were all about longline maxis. The hemlines spotted at the Spring/Summer 2023 collections flirted with the floor and elongated the body. As demonstrated by the models at the shows, the versatile denim maxis offer endless styling opportunities, and can be dressed up or down as per the occasion. Street-stylers and social media influencers were clearly inspired by what they saw on the catwalks.

Scandinavian fashion influencer Pernille Teisbaek has been wearing maxi-skirts non-stop this year at fashion weeks and out on the street, and Emma Chamberlain also seems to agree.

You live long enough, you see trends come in, go out out and come back again, and we’re glad this one’s back just in time for winter. We’re noticing the ’90s era reentering the sartorial zeitgeist, with designers and showgoers embracing calf-length or longer maxi skirts with cheeky front and side slits for Spring 2023.

They’re making it ‘cool’ again by pairing the skirt with cropped cardigan knits, plain, belly-exposing tank tops, matching denim jackets, oversized blazers and layered belts. Well, however many years later, the time has come for the long denim skirt to get the nostalgia-makes-everything-feel-chic treatment.

Brands aka arbiters-of-cool like Acne Studios, Khaite, Frame and Ganni have designed their own takes on the style and updated it for 2022 with strategic slits, acid washes, distressed elements and flattering structures. Denim maxi skirts are a hardworking and seemingly simple everyday staple, but did you know that they work just as well for evening outings?

And, the best part? All these long, maxi skirts pair beautifully with a humble white tee and your go-to shoes, whether they’re boots or sneakers or even heels—and magically turns your ensemble into a “hot girl fall” ‘fit. That’s the thing with a not-so-basic basic garment—it actually makes getting dressed *more* simple.
