This year is no different, with celebrities from all over the world turning up in the South of France in their best finery. As we combed through the many, many stunning looks at the red carpet this year, we noticed a few trends that were popular this time around. From gowns that look like huge cakes to cut-outs, here are a few trends that we spotted at the Cannes 2022 red carpet so far…

Maximalist silhouettes and the Cannes red carpet have had a long association. So it was not a surprise when celebrities turned up at the red carpet with gigantic skirts and long, trailing trains behind them. Think Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s black Dolce and Gabbana gown with 3-D floral details, or Allesandra Ambrosio’s Elie Saab gown with faux rose petals appliqued all over. Bachchan’s Venus-inspired Gaurav Gupta gown screamed extravagance as well. Jessica Wang, too, opted for a floral fantasy with her Nicolas Gebran gown and continued on the maximalist trend with her Celia Kritharioti ‘cloud’ dress and Giambattista Valli tulle tiered gown. Danish model Josephine Skriver’s Tony Ward Couture gown was structural yet romantic with a long, flowy train and Emilia Schule, too, wore a Kavier Gauche mini dress with a long, train behind her.

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection for Valentino had models walking in head-to-toe hot pink through a set done up in a similar colour. The designer’s vision was clearly a hit because it has been one of the favourites of celebrities walking the red carpet at the film festival this year. These include celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Masoom Minawala, Anne Hathaway, Katherine Langford, Naomi Campbell, Caroline Daur, and Berenice Bejo so far.

Sun’s out, shoulders out seems to be the philosophy of celebrities enjoying the sunny weather in the French Riviera these past few days. Strapless or off-the-shoulder gowns or halter necklines were spotted on Anne Hathaway (in Armani Privé), Josephine Skriver (in Tony Ward Couture), Chanel Iman (in Monot), Jennifer Connelly (in Louis Vuitton), Eva Longoria (in Cristina Ottaviano) Noomi Rapace (in Dior) and Jasmine Tookes (in Pinko) to name a few!

Cut-outs and nude illusions have also been big on the red carpet. Adriana Lima took a note out of Rihanna’s maternity dressing stylebook and wore a baby bump-baring Balmain gown. German model Toni Garrn’s white Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini gown and Lily Donaldson’s sparkly Celine gown had side cut-outs, while Allesandra Ambrosio’s Stephane Rolland Couture had an illusion bodice paired with a huge voluminous skirt.

The sunshine-hue was another popular colour with the film festival attendees as many opted for monotone looks of the same. These include Jasmine Tookes (in a Tony Ward Couture gown), Lori Harvey (in an Alexandre Vauthier gown), and Viola Davis (in an Alexander McQueen gown).
