“Streetwear, during its inception, was loud and aggressive,” says Pranav Mishra, co-founder of Huemn, one of India’s oldest and coolest streetwear brands, although Mishra claims they’re no longer just streetwear designers, “But over the years, it became assimilated into mainstream fashion because the boundaries have become soluble. We’re storytellers who are just reflecting everything’s that’s going on around us, in our community, through clothes.”
This, according to Mishra, is the reason for their continued relevance and longevity. The brand is ready to ring in its 10th anniversary at Lakmé Fashion Week 2022, in partnership with premium wearable tech brand boAt, and the designer claims that the collection has some elements that we have never seen before.
“The showcase will be an extension of our line, with lots of sweatshirts, T-shirts, and for the first time, dresses!” exclaims Mishra, “We’ve been hearing from our community for ages that they want to see dresses from Huemn and we’ve delivered. You’re going to see tailored silhouettes in the streetwear space and reimagined shapes.”

The designer credits the time that has gone by as a major inspiration for the upcoming showcase. “This is our 10th anniversary, so there’s a bit of nostalgia for the kind of work we’ve done in the past, and this collection is very reminiscent of our journey. You’ll see the reflection of whatever we, as a community, are going through in our collections.”
A brand whose core philosophy is based on staying relevant through a dynamic socio-political climate has to have been affected by the global pandemic. Mishra agrees and adds, “It has acted as fuel for us to reenergise our processes. There is a sense of renewed energy in us, and a course correction, so to speak, not only in our design philosophy but the way we function as humans too.”
