“Effortless style goes a long way rather than chasing after fads and aping them,” says designer Raghavendra Rathore. This ties in with his core design philosophy, which is, in his own words, “stitches bucolic simplicity with classic panache and creates a dynamic synergy threading traditional elegance and contemporary chic.”

The designer, who is unofficially known as the ‘King of Bandhgalas’, has become synonymous with understated elegance and an old-world charm. “The ‘Rathore Look’ continues to embody classic elegance that is reminiscent of regal splendour, with a global appeal exemplifying dapper dressing. This philosophy has led us to challenging this realm by ‘reinventing the wheel’; resurrecting the old world aesthetics and steering the brand towards an international audience,” says the designer.

With his recently launched ready-to-wear brand RR Blue, Rathore is also aiming to make his designs available to a wider range of people with accessible price points and tweaks in the design philosophies. “The RR Blue label is inspired by the parent luxury brand Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur,” says the designer, “However, the styles that form the core DNA of this new label differ greatly in style, fabrics and, most importantly, fall into the necessary day-to-day clothing category. It’s designed with a bent of mind for a chic individual who prefers to travel with smart clothing and be ready for any eventuality with the styling and essence of the RR brand.”

With his clientele including royals and the top names in Bollywood, the designer is an authority on all things formal menswear. On the surface, formal menswear can seem fairly simple and uncomplicated. Rathore agrees but adds that there are still so many ways in which people can get it wrong spectacularly. Like pairing socks with open sandals, a trend that he fails to understand and often makes him want to pull out his hair. “Trying too hard to make a statement is not the prerogative but to stay true to one’s personality and comfort,” he says, “Subtle and minimal styling is key rather than cumbersome and over-the-top detailing.”

Avoid Common Dressing Mistakes, According To Raghavendra Rathore

Size Matters

“Avoid buying an oversized suit,” says Rathore, “The right fit can make a huge difference to one’s look.”

Don’t Skip the Socks

“Wearing a suit without socks would also be a mistake when dressing formally,” he says.

Accessorise with Constraint

“Moderation is key along with accessories that complement the look,” says the designer, “Accessories should be used as accents rather than the emphasis of one’s look.”

Tuck and Belt, in that Order

“The shirt must always be tucked in when worn with a suit,” he says, “And don’t forget a belt.”

Matching Game

“The belt and shoe should ideally match,” says Rathore.
