5 Indian Celebrities Who Made A Mark On The Met Gala Red Carpet

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the Met Gala red carpet is one of the most important nights of the year for the fashion industry and celebrities all over the world. With India taking to the global stage successfully over the past few years, it’s no surprise that Indians have made their presence known (and appreciated) at the prestigious event too.
It all started back in 2017 when Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and Isha Ambani made their Met Gala debuts and the rest, as they say, is history.
Now that we’re just hours ahead of the 2023 Met Gala and can expect a few familiar faces on the red carpet (Alia Bhatt slaying in Prabal Gurung, maybe?), let’s take a look back at all the Indian celebrities who’ve given us some of the best red carpet moments from the iconic event…

Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra was already making waves with her big international TV show debut when she decided to take it a step further and attend the Met Gala. For her first appearance, the actress wore a Ralph Lauren trench coat/dress hybrid with a gigantic train and now-husband Nick Jonas on her arm. All eyes were on her as she posed for the cameras and strutted her way into the Met Gala Looks Hall of Fame. After another Ralph Lauren look for 2018, the Citadel actress went with a Dior Haute Couture look, complete with avant-garde hair and make-up for the 2018 Met Gala’s theme around camp.

Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone is no stranger to international fame and recognition. Before she became a mainstay at red carpets like the Cannes Film Festival’s or became the first Indian celebrity ever to unveil the FIFA World Cup trophy, Padukone was turning heads on the Met Gala carpet with her stunning beauty and fashion. In 2017, the actress made her debut with a Tommy Hilfiger strappy gown but turned up the heat in 2018 with a striking red gown by Prabal Gurung. In 2019, however, Padukone was hailed as one of the best-dressed celebrities on the carpet with her Barbie-esque Zac Posen gown and gravity-defying hair.

Isha Ambani
The daughter of billionaire Mukesh Ambani picked out a beautiful gown from Maria Grazia’s debut collection for Dior at the 2017 Met Gala. For the 2019 Met Gala, she chose a pale violet Prabal Gurung gown and mesmerised the paparazzi in New York. She kept her make-up and hair minimal for both her red carpet outings, opting for soft glamour both times.

Natasha Poonawalla
Philanthropist and fashion icon Natasha Poonawalla is a Met Gala regular. She’s had some iconic looks over the years, but none can beat her 2022 look where she combined Sabyasachi with Schiaparelli. Poonawalla wore a custom-made golden Sabyasachi sari and paired it with a hand-forged metallic bustier by Schiaparelli. Needless to say, she was one of the most talked about celebrities that year.

Sudha Reddy
Back in 2021, Hyderabad-based philanthropist and art connoisseur Sudha Reddy was the only Indian on the Met Gala red carpet. Reddy wore a Falguni and Shane Peacock gown that, reportedly, took more than 250 hours to make. Read our interview with the ‘Queen Bee of Hyderabad’ where she recalls what it was like to rub shoulders with fashion biggies like Anna Wintour and Gigi Hadid.
