Bailey will be coming in as Fiyero, the love interest of Elphaba and Galinda, played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande respectively. The two female leads shared the news of them joining the cast earlier this year in a heartwarming Instagram post. Wicked, which is one of the biggest musicals on Broadway, originally starred Edina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda. The film adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who is known for his chart-topping hit movie, Crazy Rich Asians.
Chu decided to make the film in two parts, since it was impossible to fit the musical marvel in just one film. “As we prepared the production over the last year, it became impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film, without doing some real damage to it,” Chu shared. He added, “We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but two!” While both movies will be released during Christmas, the first part will hit the screens in 2024 while the final one will release in 2025.
Jonathan Bailey is no stranger to musicals since he has been a part of the theatres since the mid-’90s. The actor is currently working on the third season of Bridgerton and will be seen next as Matt Bomer’s love interest in the upcoming series, Fellow Travelers.
