If a few years ago, anyone had said that Greta Garwig would be directing a live-action Barbie movie, we would have checked their temperatures and maybe told them to not stay out in the heat for too long.

Turns out, it’s very much a reality and the movie also has an official release date now: the movie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.

In the most obvious casting choice in the whole world, Margot Robbie is going to play Barbie and Ryan Gosling will be her boyfriend Ken. The first look of the movie shows Robbie sitting in Barbie’s iconic pink convertible, with her perfectly coiffed hair.

The Little Women director has co-written the script with her real-life husband and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach. In case this is not enough to make you eagerly wait for the movie’s release, the other cast members include Will Ferell, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, and Hari Nef.

While not much is known about the film’s plot and other details, Robbie has spoken about the pressure she has been feeling for portraying the pop culture icon and she has also hinted that the movie is something nobody can expect. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think ‘I know what that movie is going to be’, and then they hear that Greta Garwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t’...”, which is exactly what went through our heads, verbatim.

Stay tuned for more updates on the movie as we rewatch Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper for the 45,67,899th time to prepare ourselves for it.
